  • The 2nd Mission Innovation Ministerial and 8th Clean Energy Ministerial is being held on 6–8 June 2017.
  • China will host the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) in Beijing.
  • International business leaders and experts from over 20 member countries and the European Commission are expected to join the ministerial.
  • Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forest & Climate Change Dr. Harsh Vardhan is leading the Indian Delegation.
  • Mission Innovation (MI) was launched by leaders of 20 countries on 30th November 2015.
  • The CEM focuses on collaboration to scale clean energy technologies and solutions that are available today, while MI focuses on scaling research and development (R&D) for the new technologies of the future.
  • Members of the two fora represent about 90 percent of global clean energy investment and 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The vision of the ministerial is to:

1) Demonstrate and celebrate the “Revolution Now” of rapidly decreasing costs and increasing deployment of clean energy technologies and the national and global value propositions of economic opportunity, health and welfare, and energy security of the transition to modern, clean, and efficient energy.

2) Deepen and broaden government participation and leadership in the CEM forum to drive greater progress in the global clean energy transformation.

3) Strengthen action-oriented partnerships and collaborations with international organizations, business and industry, foundations, and others with aligned interests to raise the overall impact of all efforts.

4) Launch new, high-impact CEM campaigns that tap into globally relevant and timely clean energy areas and that encourage concrete commitments from all CEM member governments, the private sector, and other partners.

  • During the meeting 7 Innovation Challenges would be announced out of which India co-leads 3 challenges: Smart Grid, Off-Grid Access and Sustainable bio-fuels.
  • Under the Indo-US Joint Clean Energy Research (PACE-R) the new collaborative public – private programme on Smart Grids & Energy Storage would be announced.
  • India has initiated Joint virtual Clean Energy Centre with UK and has committed £5 million.
