  • On 1st October 2021, ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), announced its first “demand-driven” communications satellite mission as part of the space reform announced by the government in June last year.
  • NSIL was established in March 2019 and is authorized to operate satellite missions in a “demand-driven” model, in which it has the responsibility to build, launch, own and operate satellites and provide services to its promised customers.
  • As part of this plan, the Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) NSIL, which is affiliated to the Department of Space and Space (DOS), is now executing its “First Demand Driven Communications Satellite Mission” called GSAT-24, which is a 4 ton class Ku-band satellite. NSIL is getting this satellite to be built by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and will launch it using the Ariane-5 launcher operated by Arianespace.
  • The entire satellite capacity on GSAT-24 will be leased to its loyal customer M/s Tata Sky to meet their DTH application needs.
  • NSIL stated that it has reached the necessary agreement with Tata Sky to utilize the satellite capacity on the GSAT-24 and reached a necessary agreement with Arianespace to seek launch services.
  • The GSAT-24 satellite will be owned and operated by NSIL on a commercial basis.
  • According to reports, NSIL plans to launch the GSAT-24 satellite in the first quarter of 2022.
