Background-

  • In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
  • This date was designated as the international Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer by United Nation on 19 December, 2000.

Why celebrated-

  • The day is celebrated not only to commemorate the date on which the Montreal Convention was signed, but to create awareness about how fast the ozone layer is getting depleted.
  • To make people aware about formation of ozone layer and methods to stop its depletion.

Montreal protocol-

  • Montreal Protocol is a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.
  • It is a global agreement, finalized in 1987, to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
  • The stratospheric ozone layer prevents the harmful ultraviolet radiation from coming into the earth’s atmosphere.
