  • On 16 July 2021, United States Navy has handed over first batch of two MH-60R Multi Role Helicopters (MRH) to Indian Navy.

Key facts:

  • MH-60R helicopters is manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corporation, USA.
  • It is an all-weather helicopter designed to support multiple missions with state of the art avionics/ sensors. These helicopters are considered as world’s most advanced maritime helicopter.
  • Indian Navy is procuring 24 of MH-60R helicopters under Foreign Military Sales from the US Government.
  • Its purchase was cleared by Union Cabinet of India in February 2020 before historic visit of then US President Donald Trump.

Significance:

  • The induction of these MRH would further enhance Indian Navy’s three dimensional capabilities.
  • It will provide India with capability to perform anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions.
  • The helicopter is also able to perform secondary missions like vertical replenishment, search & rescue and communications relay.
