  • On 11 October 2018 Human Capital Index was released by the World Bank under the 2019 World Development Report.
  • This is the first Human Capital Index report of the World Bank in which 157 countries are assessed on the parameters like child mortality, health and education.




  • Singapore is on the first spot while Chad secured the 157th (lowest) rank.
  • India has been ranked 115th in this index.
  • It is to be noted that Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka have been placed at 106th, 102nd and 74th position respectively in this index.
  • The World Bank gave India a score of 0.44 out of 1.0, lower than the average for its income-level countries.




  • It shows that the children born in India today will be 44 per cent productive when they grow up if they enjoy complete education and full health.
  • Girls are slightly better in this Index, attaining 0.45 points than boys, who scored 0.43 points.
