  • These rankings are released to map the level of higher education in the country under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) launched in 2015.

What is National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)?

  • In order to frame a methodology to rank institutions across the country, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015.
  • The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.
  • The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

2020 Rankings:

  • Ranking for the fifth time (since 2016) was released t in 10 categories viz Overall, University, Engineering, Management, Colleges, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, Law and Dental.
  • In 2020, “Dental” category has been introduced for the first time.
  • In this survey, government and non-governmental higher educational institutions across the country have been included.
