  • On June 7, 2017, the Central Government appointed KG Karmakar and Gauri Shankar as the new independent directors of Indian Postal Payment Bank (IPPB).
  • Their tenure as directors of IPPB will be of 3 years.
  • The India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)[1] has been recently incorporated as a Public Limited Company under the Department of Posts with 100% Governmet of India equity.
  • The goal of this bank is to provide banking services in remote areas left untouched so far.
  • Indian Postal Payment Bank is the third payments bank, after the Paytm Payments Bank Ltd. And Airtel Payments Bank Ltd. which were licensed from RBI.
  • Payment banks do not accept fixed deposits and recurring deposits, but can accept demand deposits up to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh through savings accounts and current accounts.
  • In the form of pilot project on January 30, 2017, branches of Indian Postal Payment Bank were inaugurated in Ranchi, Jharkhand and Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
  • By September, 2017, it is planned to be started in 650 branches across the country.
