Related Facts:-
- State-owned NTPC Ltd has awarded Andhra Pradesh India’s first green hydrogen microgrid project.
- The project has been awarded to NTPC Ltd.’s Simhadri plant in Andhra Pradesh.
- At this plant the corporation will work on a project called Standalone Fuel-cell based Microgrid, with hydrogen production using electrolyzer.
- This will be India’s first Green Hydrogen based Energy Storage Project and one of world’s largest.
- The hydrogen would be produced using the advanced 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser by taking input power from the nearby Floating Solar project.
- The hydrogen produced during sunshine hours would be stored at high pressure and would be electrified using a 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell.
- The system would work in a standalone mode from 5 PM to 7 AM.
- This unique project configuration is designed in-house by NTPC.
- This unique project for India would open doors for decarbonising the far-off regions of the country like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) etc.
- The project is in-line with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for becoming carbon neutral by 2070 and making Ladakh a carbon-neutral territory.
- In addition, as part of its energy security strategy, India plans to invite bids for the construction of 4 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzer capacity.
- This project will serve as a testbed for large-scale hydrogen energy storage systems.
- Multiple microgrids will also be studied and deployed in numerous off-grid and key places in India.
- Simhadri Super Thermal Power Plant, located in Simhadri, India, is a coal-fired power plant in the Andhra Pradesh city of Visakhapatnam.
- It’s one of NTPC’s coal-fired power plants. The coal for this power station comes from the Talcher Coal resources in Odisha’s Kalinga Block.
