  • On 26th August, 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 summit, despite India not being a member of the grouping.
  • India was personally invited to be a part of the summit by French President Emmanuel Macron. This reflected the personal chemistry between the two leaders and also recognition of India as a major economic power.
  • PM Modi reached Biarritz, France for the Summit on 25th August.
  • He participated in two sessions at the G7 summit on climate, biodiversity, oceans, taxation and on digital transformation. He will hold separate bilateral interactions with the world leaders.

How India in the summit:

  • India has been specially invited as a Biarritz partner country for the 45th G7 Summit along with other nations including Australia, Spain, Chile, South Africa, Senegal, Egypt, Iran and Rwanda.
  • The main theme of the G7 summit this year is “Combating Inequality” and its main focus will be on the climate and biodiversity.
  • India has been invited to attend the G7 summit after a gap of almost 10 years. The last time India was invited to the summit was in 2005, when the then British Prime Minister Tony Blair had invited the then Indian PM Manmohan Singh to attend the G7 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland.

Group of Seven (G7):

  • The Group of Seven (G7) is an international inter-governmental economic organization consisting of the seven largest IMF-described advanced economies in the world.
  • This Group consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • Between 1997 and 2014, the group included Russia and was known as the Group of Eight, and had for a year been known as the Group of Six before the 1976 inclusion of Canada.
  • The last G7 summit in 2018 was hosted by Canada in La Malbaie, Quebec.
