- On 25 October 2016 World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Global Gender Gap Report 2016.
- Global Gender Gap Report 2016 ranked 144 countries.
- The report measures gender gap as progress towards parity between men and women in four areas:
(i) Educational attainment,
(ii) Health and survival,
(iii) Economic opportunity and
(iv) Political empowerment. - The index ranges from 0 to 1; 0 means complete gender inequality, and 1 means complete gender equality.
- Iceland topped the index with the score of 0.874.
- Then the Index is followed by Finland (2), Norway (3), Sweden (4) and Rwanda (5).
- Five countries with least gender equality are Chad (140), Saudi Arabia (141), Syria (142), Pakistan (143) and Yemen (144).
- India has been ranked 87th out of 144 countries on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2016.
- India has climbed 21 position from 108th position in 2015.
- India’s achievements in various areas of this index are:
• Economic opportunity-136th
• Educational attainment-113rd
• Health and survival-142nd
• Political empowerment-9th - The highest position in the BRICS countries is attained by South Africa i.e 15th.
- Other BRICS countries are ranked as Russian Federation (75th), Brazil (79th) and China (99th).
- Among the neighboring countries of India, Bangladesh ranked 72nd, Bhutan 121st, Nepal is ranked 110th and Pakistan 143rd.
- In this Index none of the country of the world got score of 1 means that any country in the world has not earned complete gender equality.
