  • On January 9, 2018, the ‘First PIO Parliamentarian Conference’ was held in the Overseas Indian Center, New Delhi.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this one-day conference.
  • The purpose of this conference is to strengthen the relations with these countries through the contact with the overseas Indians.
  • In this conference, 141 MPs and mayors from 23 countries participated.
  • In which 124 MPs from Britain, Canada, Fiji, Kenya, Mauritius, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and other countries participated.
  • While 17 mayors from other countries including the US, Malaysia, Switzerland, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago participated.
  • There were two main points discussed in this event. In which the theme of the first session was- Indian-origin MP’s settled overseas: “The journey of struggle” and in the second part special discussion taken place on ‘Resurgent India’: Contributions of Indian-origin MPs residing overseas.
  • It is worth mentioning that on 9th January every year, ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’ is celebrated to highlight the contribution of people of Indian origin, based overseas, to the development of India.
  • This day is celebrated on January 9, 1915 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa.
