- On December 9, 2017, a MoU was signed between the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Government of Meghalaya in Shillong.
- Accordingly, the central government sanctioned 75 crores for Meghalaya.
- This sanctioned is for that the first LPG bottling (Kupharian) plant can be set up in Meghalaya.
- This step will help increase the clean fuel’s penetration, especially in the rural areas of the state.
- The bottling plant will have annual capacity of 13,000 metric tonnes.
- It is noteworthy that the LPG penetration in Meghalaya is the lowest in the North East region.
- For the said reason Centre has decided to implement the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in the state in full swing.
- Only 27 per cent of the households in the state are linked with LPG connectivity which is much below the national average.
- At present there are only 49 LPG distributors in the state.
