  • On May 30, 2017, Secretary of Earth Sciences M. Rajeevan announced that the Ministry of Earth Sciences will launch ‘Deep Ocean Mission’ in January 2018.
  • India is the first country in the world to have been given the pioneer area for exploration of deep-sea.
  • India had got the opportunity of exploration in Polymetalic Nodules in the Central Indian Ocean Basin in 1987.
  • Study was done Under the National Polymetalic Modules Program, for the mining of nodules, for the development of mining technology by National Institute of Ocean Technology, by CSIR-NIO for Environmental Impact Assessment Studies and CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory and CSIR Minerals and Metals Technology Institute for Metal Extraction Development.
  • This program is financed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • At present, on the basis of resource evaluation, India has approximately 75,000 square kilometers of Area with approximately 100 million tonnes of strategic metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese and iron.
