  • On 14 December 2016; The project titled ‘Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli’ (SACReD, Majuli) has been initiated by Assam’s department of Environment and Forest.
  • It was launched by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Biodiversity and Climate) A K Johari at Majuli.
  • This project has been launched by Assam government to make River Island Majuli the country’s first ever Carbon Neutral district by 2020.
  • The project will be designed and implemented in partnership with other departments of the district for which a district level committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner has been constituted.
  • It may be recalled that in September 2016 Majuli became the first island district of India after it was inaugurated as the 35th district of Assam by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
