- On 10 November 2016 Kumbakonam-based City Union Bank launched India’s first banking robot Lakshmi.
- Lakshmi, which took more than six months to develop, can answer intelligently on more than 125 subjects.
- The robot, imported from France, has been customized in Coimbatore to provide basic information about the bank’s history, deposit and lending rates, special schemes for students and number of branches among other things.
- Initially, Lakshmi will provide answers in English, followed by regional languages in the coming months.
- Later, it will be integrated with the Core Banking System to enable it to do multi-tasking such as providing account details and ordering cheque books.
