  • On 22nd January, 2017 China notified to reinforce censorship on unauthorized internet connection including virtual private network (VPN) services that allow users to bypass restrictions known as the Great Firewall.
  • The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology informed that it is launching a nationwide clean-up campaign aimed at internet service provider, internet data center and content delivery network companies.
  • It also ordered enquiry for companies operating without government licenses or beyond the scope of licenses.
  • The ministry reiterated that renting communication channels, including VPNs, without governmental approval had already been forbidden.
  • China is home to around 731 million internet users. Some of the biggest internet companies such as Tencent Holdings, Baidu Inc and Alibaba Group Holding are Chinese firms.
  • The government also censors the internet and blocks many sites which could challenge the rule of the Communist Party or threaten law and order. Sites such as Facebook and Google and Gmail are banned in China.
