Related facts

  • On 14 September 2018, Ministry of power, government of India launched an ambitious program to encourage the development of energy efficient chiller systems in the country.
  • The program has been formulated by bureau of energy efficiency (BEE).
  • The program envisages for providing star rating in terms of its energy performance.
  • Initially, it is launched on voluntary basis and will be valid upto 31st decmber 2020.
  • The initiative will promote advancement in technology for central HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system and will also helpful in energy efficient solutions for the large commercial and industrial applications.

Bureau of energy efficiency (BEE)-

  • It is an agency of the government of India, under ministry of power.
  • It was created in March 2002 under the provisions of the Energy conservation act 2001.
  • Function of this agency is to develop programs which will increase the conservation and efficient use of energy in India.

Chillers-

  • Chiller is a heat transfer device that uses refrigeration system to remove heat from a process load and transfers the heat to the environment.
  • They are used to lower the temperature of all kinds of equipment and processes.
  • Chillers are used extensively for space conditioning of buildings and for industrial process cooling applications.
  • Chillers are energy intensive system which contributes more than 40 % of the total energy consumption in commercial buildings.
  • So, it is important to optimize energy performance of chillers and create awareness amongst the end users to adopt energy efficient chillers.
