Context

  • The National Water Mission’s (NWM) campaign called “Catch the Rain” will be launched in states.

Facts

  • National Water Mission’s (NWM) campaign “Catch The Rain” with the tagline “Catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls” is to inspire the states and stake-holders to create appropriate Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS) suitable to the climatic conditions and sub-soil strata before monsoon.
  • It will be launched before the arrival of monsoon.
  • Under the campaign with the active participation of people various drives will be taken up to make check dams, water harvesting pits, rooftop RWHS etc; removal of encroachments and de-silting of tanks to increase their storage capacity; removal of obstructions in the channels which bring water to them from the catchment areas etc.
  • States have been requested to open “Rain Centers” in each district– in Collectorates/Municipalities or GP offices for conducting these activities.
  • The centre will act as a technical guidance centre in all the district and raise awareness as to how to catch the rain, when it falls, where it falls.

National Water Mission

  • It was launched in 2011 for the purpose of minimizing wastage of water, conserving water, increasing efficiency of water use and managing water resources in such way that it provides for equitable and sustainable water availability for every strata of society.
  • It is programme of Ministry of Jal Shakti .
