About Canine Parvovirus

  • It is one of the most serious and highly contagious virus that dogs can get.
  • This virus was discovered in 1967 and has rapidly become a serious threat to canine health.
  • This virus affects the intestinal tract of canines and puppies are more susceptible to it.
  • Symptoms associated with the virus include- vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration, drastic weight loss, and lethargy.
  • Parvovirus has reported a 90 per cent mortality rate.
  • While canine parvovirus is not airborne, it can be found on many surfaces within the environment.
  • Parvovirus spreads through direct contact with the infected dog or by indirect contact with any contaminated object, like hands and clothing of people handling infected dogs

Can Humans Get Parvovirus?

  • Parvovirus is species-specific, so humans have their own version of the virus. This means that humans cannot get parvovirus from dogs, and dogs cannot get parvovirus from people.

  • According to Amravati-based WASA Conservation organisation, government-run clinic is getting reports that 20 dogs affected by this virus daily.
  • Veterinarians have also cautioned pet owners against a severe outbreak.
