  • On 13 January 2016 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched 4G services for its employees in Chandigarh as soft launch.
  • It is non-commercial service as of now. It will be open for limited number of BSNL employees, while customers can visit the 4G centre to experience it.
  • As per the operator, its 4G services will provide a broadband speed of up to 100 Mbps on mobile as well as fixed-line networks.
  • With this launch, BSNL became fifth telecom service provider in India to launch 4G service after Airtel (1st), Aircel (2nd), Vodafone (3rd) and Reliance Jio (4th).
  • BSNL has launched the 4G services by utilising spectrum in the 2500 MHz band.
  • BSNL is first to start the 4G service in 2500 Mhz band.
  • BSNL has spectrum in the 2500 MHz band across the country, except in the Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kolkata circles.
  • BSNL is also in talks with Reliance JioInfocomm Limited (RJIL) to offer 4G services to its customers using RJIL’s network.
  • Further, BSNL is planning to deploy 2500 Wi-Fi hotspots by March 2016 and plans to increase them to 40,000 by March 2017.
