  • On 27 May 2016 Indian Air force has successfully tested fired BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. The missile has the flight range of up to 290 km.
  • It has a velocity of 2.5 to 3.0 Mach. It is one of the world’s fastest cruise missiles.
  • It should be known that BrahMos is a joint venture between the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited.
  • The name BrahMos is formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.
  • The missile has identical configuration for being launched from land, sea and sub­sea platforms and uses a Transport Launch Canister (TLC) for transportation, storage and launch. The navy and army versions of the missile were inducted in 2005 and 2007 respectively.
  • It may be recalled that India on 14 February 2015 successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from Indian Navy’s latest destroyer INS Kolkata.
