- On 29 January 2016, Japan’s central bank, the Bank of Japan after two-day monetary policy meeting made an announcement to implement the negative interest rates.
- Voting 5-4 in favour of the measure, the bank announced that it will charge an interest rate of -0.1%.
- The negative interest rate will applied from February 16, 2016.
- In the simplest form it can be understood as, if a commercial bank will deposit the money in the central bank in return the central bank of Japan bank will charge interest at the rate of 0.1 per cent.
