- Nepal Power Exchange Limited(NPEL) has recently(January 2022) signed a business agreement with Manikaran Power Limited.
- Aim — to facilitate electricity trade between India and Nepal.
- Under this agreement, NPEL will sell electricity generated by the domestic private sector to India through Manikaran Power Limited(MPL).
- This is for the first time that the private sector of Nepal and India have signed an agreement to facilitate power trading between the two countries.
- The agreement will allow Nepal to sell more than 490 MW of electricity to India in the initial phase.
- Under the agreement, MPL will invest in 15 per cent of shares belonging to Nepal Power Exchange, which is equivalent to NRs 300 million.
- Once the agreement comes into effect, it will pave the way for the Nepal Power Exchange to sell electricity produced by the private sector via MPL.
- The Nepal Power Exchange now has to receive a licence from the government.
