- On August 1st, 2017, a bilateral agreement between India and Somalia has been signed for the transfer of sentenced persons.
- External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for India and Foreign Minister Yusuf Garaad Omar for Republic of Somalia signed the agreement.
- Signing the Agreement with Somalia shall facilitate the Indian prisoners imprisoned in Somalia or vice-versa to be near to their families, for serving remaining part of their sentence and shall facilitate their social rehabilitation.
- The signing of the agreement will strengthen the humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
- Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia Yusuf-Garaad Omar arrived on July 31st, 2017, on a five-day visit.
- Earlier, on June 7th, 2017, cabinet had given its approval for signing and subsequent ratification of the Agreement.
