  • On April 5, 2017; the Central Cabinet approved the signing of the Air Service Agreement (ASA) between India and Georgia, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The agreement between the two countries is based on the latest template of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
  • The purpose of this agreement is to improve air connectivity between the two countries in view of development in the civil aviation sector.
  • It is important that there is no air connectivity agreement between India and Georgia currently.
  • Air contact agreement is the basic legal framework for air operations between the two countries.
  • The following are the features of this Air Services Agreement:
    (1) Both countries can nominate one or more aviation companies.
    (2) With this agreement, Indian aviation companies can now start flying services from any city in India to any city in Georgia.
    (3) Georgia’s aviation companies can start direct flights to six cities of India, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Goa.
    (4) In addition, the aviation companies nominated by both sides can provide services for any intermediate and outside city for the convenience of the route.
    (5) The nominated aviation company of any country will have the right to set up offices in another country for the sale and promotion of its air services.
    (6) The nominated aviation company of each party can make cooperative marketing arrangements with its designated aviation companies or third parties
    (7) This will not only provide direct contact but will also establish air connectivity with the third country.
  • This agreement will encourage normal trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries and help in coordination with development in the civil aviation sector.
