  • From September3rd -5th, 2017; the 9th BRICS Summit was organized in Xiamen, China.
  • It is known that prior to this, the 3rd BRICS Summit was held in April 2011 in Sanya, China.
  • The 9thsummit was chaired by China President Xi Jinping.
  • The theme of this summit was ‘BRICS: Stronger Partnership for Brighter Future’.
  • President of hosting nation Xi Jinping, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Michele Taymer, Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Jacob Zuma participated in the three-day summit.
  • In this Summit, discussions were held to increase cooperation between the member countries in economic areas.
  • In this summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on terrorism as a threat to the entire world and adhered to deal it strictly.
  • During this summit, BRICS member countries adopted 71-point ‘Xiamen Declaration’ on September 4, 2017.
  • In the joint declaration, without naming the Pakistan, it has been condemned for the terrorist attacks in the member countries, it has been said that this organization condemns every kind of terrorism around the world, including BRICS countries, wherever the attacks are done, whoever did these, terrorist activities cannot be considered as correct in any way.
  • Understanding India’s concern over Pakistan-induced terrorism, BRICS member-states for the first time bracketed Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taebbya (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Haqqani network with the Islamic State, paving the way for strong future action against these globally outlawed terror outfits and termed these organization as a threat to security, convicted for violence.
  • The other groups which have been named include Taliban, ISIS / DAISH and Al Qaeda.
  • This is the first time that a BRICS declaration has named these terrorist groups and expressed concern over its activities.
  • During the BRICS summit-2017, the following 4 documents were signed in presence of BRICS leaders on September 4, 2017-
    1- BRICS Action Agenda on Economic and Trade Cooperation
    2- BRICS Action Plan for Innovation Cooperation(2017-2020)
    3- Strategic Framework of BRICS Customs Cooperation
    4- Memorandum of Understanding between the BRICS Business Council and the New Development Bank on Strategic Cooperation
  • Significantly, the term BRIC was first used by Goldman Sachs in the context of the study of global economic trends in the coming half-century in 2001, in his global economic paper, “The World Needs Better’ Economic BRICs”.
  • BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • The first formal summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
  • It was established in 2009. Originally it was known as BRIC before the inclusion of South Africa in 2011 and thereafter it became BRICS.
  • Together, they account for 26.46% of world land area, 42.58% of world population.
  • According to IMF’s estimates, BRICS countries generated 22.53% of the world GDP.
  • Johannesburg, South Africa will host the ’10th BRICS Summit’ in 2018.
