- 5th Round of India-Japan Maritime Affairs Dialogue was held in Tokyo on 24 December 2019.
- Meanwhile, the countries also held their 8th round of bilateral consultations on disarmament and non-proliferation and export control in Tokyo on December 23.
- Indian delegation was led by Indra Mani Pandey, Additional Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs), Ministry of External Affairs, while Japanese delegation was led by Ambassador Yamanaka A Osamu, Deputy Assistant Minister, Deputy Director-General in Foreign Policy Bureau.
- India and Japan have agreed to deepen maritime cooperation and also held consultations on disarmament, non-proliferation and export control.
- The first round of India-Japan Maritime dialogue was held in New Delhi in 2013.
- The countries have signed Acquisition and Cross Serving Agreement that allows access to each other’s military bases.
- Through this ageement, India is now able to access Japan base in Djibouti and Japanese Navy are able to access Indian Naval base in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- India- Japan also holds 2+2 defence dialogue. Apart from the US, Japan is the only country with which India holds such defence dialogue.
