  • The 2019 South Asian Games, officially the XIII South Asian Games,held from 1-10 December 2019 in Nepal. It was held in three cities namely, Pokhara, Kathmandu, and Janakpur.
  • President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari declared opening of games in a glittering ceremony at Dasaratha Rangshala Stadium in Kathmandu.
  • The 10 Days long Games witnessed the participation of seven South Asian Countries India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan.
  • 2,715 athletes participated in 28 sports. Cricket returned to the games after a gap of eight years.
  • A pair of blackbucks(Krishnashar) was the official mascot for the 2019 South Asian Games.
  • Blackbucks are the only extant member of the genus Antelope and mostly found in the southern region of Nepal and is an endangered species with in Nepal.
  • India finished on top with 311 medals comprising 173 gold, 93 silver and 45 bronze.
  • Host country Nepal recorded their best ever performance by achieving the second highest number of gold medals after India(51 gold, 60 silver and 95 bronze).

South Asian Games:

  • The South Asian Games (SAF Games, SAG, or SA games, and formerly known as South Asian Federation Games) is a biennial multi-sport event held among the athletes from South Asia.
  • The 8 members of SAG are India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
  • South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC), formed in 1983 is the governing body of these games.
  • The first South Asian Games were hosted by Kathmandu, Nepal in 1984.
  • From 1984 to 1987 they were held every year except 1986, as it was a year of Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
