  • On April 18th, 2018, World Heritage Day or International Day for Monuments and Sites is being observed around the world.
  • The 2018 theme for the ICOMOS International Day for Monuments and Sites is Heritage for Generationsled by the ICOMOS Emerging Professionals Working Group.
  • Sharing stories and the transfer of knowledge between generations is a crucial step in cultural development, characterising the human experience since time immemorial.
  • On 18th April 1982, on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS Tunisia and a corresponding meeting of the Bureau in Hammamet, it was suggested that a day be established to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world.
  • There was also a proposal to celebrate ‘World Heritage Day’ during this time.
  • Every year on 18th April, ICOMOS celebrates the International Day for Monuments and Sites, whose establishment was approved by the 22nd UNESCO General Conference in 1983.
  • This day is celebrated to make common people aware about the diversity and protection of awareness, cultural, historical and natural heritage at protected places.
  • Last year, UNESCO included ‘Ahmadabad’ as ‘India’s first city’ in the list of ‘World Heritage City’.
  • Founded on November 16th, 1945, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, has included total 36 sites in India in the list of World Heritage.
  • 28 cultural, 7 natural places and 1 venue have been ranked in mixed category.
  • First of all, in the year 1983, the Ajanta Ellora caves from India and the fort of Agra was included in the list of World Heritage.
  • Agha Khan Foundation is doing excellent work for the protection of cultural heritage in the Indian subcontinent.
  • While undertaking industrial initiatives for the conservation of these heritages, Indian Oil Corporation has raised Rs. 25 crore for the renovation of Kanheri’s caves and Konark temple etc. and SAIL decided to spend Rs 1 crore for the repair and maintenance of Lodi Gardens buildings in Delhi.
  • The ‘International Council of Monuments and Sites’ (ICOMOS) organization was established by the International Charters of the Conservation and Renewal of Monuments and Hospices of the year 1964.
