  • World Diabetes Day was established in year 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • In 2007 UN General Assembly adopted resolution designating 14th November as World Diabetes Day.

  • Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia).
  • This day marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best  led the discovery of insulin in 1922.
