  • On 12 December 2018, the Indian Navy inducted its first flyaway third generation Deep Sea Submarine Rescue System considering of a non tethered Deep Sea Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) and its associated equipments. It was inducted formally by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba.
  • The vehicles are developed by M/s James Fisher and Sons Pvt. Ltd, a UK based company. The newly acquired capability would be operated and deployed by the crew of Indian Navy’s newly formed Submarine Rescue Unit (West) from its base in Mumbai.
  • Deep Sea Submarine Rescue System is a significant and pioneering jump in the Indian Navy’s capability in deep submarine rescue as traditional methods of search and rescue at sea are ineffective for a disabled submarine. It is used to search, locate and rescue crew from a disabled Submarine.
  • The DSRV can be operated in very rough conditions and can undertake operations up to 650 meters deep in extreme sea conditions. 3 crew member operated vehicle can rescue 14 personnel in one operation. Earlier submarine INS Sindhurakshak exploded in August 2013, killing all 18 Navy personnel who could have been saved by this system.
