  • On 21st April 2019 during Easter services, a series of bomb blast took place in Sri Lanka targeting churches and five-star hotels in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.
  • It is one of biggest attack in Sri Lanka since the war against LTTE ended in 2009.
  • In the major terrorist attack 253 people were killed, including at least 42 foreign nationalsand three police officers, and at least 500 were injured.
  • As per Sri Lankan government officials, all seven of the suicide bombers in the attacks were Sri Lankan citizens associated with National Thowheeth Jama’ath, a local militant Islamist group with suspected foreign ties, earlier known for attacks against Buddhists.
  • The explosions hit historic St. Anthony’s Church in Colombo,St. Sebastian’s church in the town of Negombo and the Zion Church in the east coast town of Batticaloa.
  • The hotels that were bombed were the Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Tropical Inn.
  • Later,in a move to ensure security President Maithripala Sirisena  banned any face garment which “hinders identification” by an emergency law .
