- On 14th June 2018, NITI Aayog has prepared a report on Composite Water Management Index (CWMI).
- The Report was launched today by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources and Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog.
- Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog and Secretaries/ senior officials of Ministry of Water Resources, Drinking Water & Sanitation and Rural Development were also present at the launch event.
- According to this report, Gujarat has got top position in the index in non-Himalayan states. After this, Madhya Pradesh is second, Andhra Pradesh third, Karnataka fourth and Maharashtra fifth.
- In the non-Himalayan states, Jharkhand has got the lowest position in this index.
- After this is the location of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to the
- Reports, performance of Jharkhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the water management is the worst.
- According to this report, Tripura got top position in the index in the Northeast and Himalayan states.
- This is followed by Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Assam respectively.
- Meghalaya in the northeast and Himalayan states has been ranked lowest in the index.
- TheReport also mentions that there is a serious water crisis in the country and there is a threat to lakhs of lives and livelihoods.
- Accordingly, about 60 million (600 million) people are battling water problems About 2 lakh people die every year due to lack of clean water.
- According to theReport, by the year 2030, demand for water supply doubled in the country.
- This report is a step further in direction and keeping in view the criticality of water for life as released in a report on “Healthy States, Progressive India” which covered the ranking of States/ UTs in various health parameters in February 2018.
- The CWMI is an important tool to assess and improve the performance of States/ Union Territories in efficient management of water resources.
- This has been done through a first of its kind water data collection exercise in partnership with Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation and all the States/ Union Territories.
- The index would provide useful information for the States and also for the concerned Central Ministries/Departments enabling them to formulate and implement suitable strategies for better management of water resources.
- Simultaneously a web portal on the subject has also been launched.
