  • September 15, 2015 “QS World University Rankings 2015-16” list issued.
  • In the overall rankings, the ‘Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’ retains the top spot for the fourth year running.
  • ‘Harvard University’ moves up two places to rank second, followed by the ‘University of Cambridge’ and ‘Stanford University’ in joint third.
  • Based on six performance indicators, the rankings are designed to assess universities in four areas: research, teaching, employability, and internationalization.
  • Four of the indicators are based on ‘hard’ data, and the remaining two are based on major global surveys – one of academics and another of employers – each the largest of their kind.
  • The indicators are – Academic reputation (40%), Employer reputation (10%), Student-to-faculty ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), International faculty ratio (5%) & international student ratio (5%).
  • A total of 82 countries are represented in the QS World University Rankings this year.
  • The US has the largest number of institutes at 154, the UK has 71, Germany has 43 and France, 41.
  • Japan has 38 entries, Australia 33, China 30, Canada and Italy 26 apiece, Brazil 22, and Russia 21.
  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has taken the top spot among Indian institutes, bagging the 147th rank while IIT Delhi has come in at 179th place.
  • Overall, there are 14 Indian institutes in the QS World University rankings. A total of 7 institutes including IISc Bangalore (147th), IIT Delhi (179th), IIT Bombay (202nd), IIT Madras (254th), IIT Kanpur (271st), IIT Kharagpur (286th), IIT Roorkee (391st) figure in the top 400.
