  • Operation Sahayata is a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for the Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique. It hit the coastal areas of Mozambique on 15th March 2019.

Operation Sahayata:

  • On request from the Republic of Mozambique, the Government of India immediately diverted 3 Indian naval ships (INS Sujata, ICGS Sarathi and INS Shardul) to the port city of Beira to undertake Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR) in coordination with local authorities and the High Commission of India, Maputo.
  • Indian naval crew has rescued/evacuated people, provided Medical assistance in medical camps set up by the Indian Navy, food & water packets were also provided in the cyclone hit areas.
  • Indian Navy ships have also undertaking community service including clearing of debris and repairing damaged roads etc. Food supplies have also been provided to about 700 persons working in the port area. Assistance is also being sent to Zimbabwe and Malawi, two other countries hit by the cyclone.
  • To sustain HADR operations, another ship INS MAGAR, suitably loaded with relief materials is being sent to Mozambique.
  • Cyclone Idai made landfall near Beira, a city of 500,000 people, with approx. 177km/h winds on 14th March. The new figure puts the overall death toll at about 700 people across Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
  • Some 1.7 million people are estimated to be affected across southern Africa, with no electricity or running water in areas where homes have been swept away and roads destroyed by the floods.
