  • On November 10, 2017, the Union Cabinet approved creation of National Testing Agency (NTA), as an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization to conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions.
  • It will be set up as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • An eminent educationist will be appointed as Chairman of this agency by HRD Ministry.
  • There will be the CEO and director general in this agency who will be appointed by the Government.
  • There will be a Board of Governors comprising members from user institutions.
  • Initially, it will conduct the exams which are currently being organized by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  • It will run the examinations online twice in a year.
  • In the first year to the National Examination Agency (NTA), the Government of India will provide a onetime grant of Rs. 25 crores.
  • Thereafter, it will be financially self-sustainable.
  • From the establishment of NTA, CBSE, AICTE and other agencies will be free from the responsibility of organizing these entrance examinations.
