  • Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10th December every year to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which was adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
  • UDHR is a milestone document proclaiming the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. 
  • 2019 theme for the day is ‘Youth Standing Up for Human Rights’.
  • The formal inception of Human Rights Day dates from 1950, after the Assembly passed resolution.

India’s concern:

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has organized a function in New Delhi on 10th December, 2019 to celebrate Human Rights Day.
  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a Statutory public body constituted on 12 October 1993 for the promotion and protection of human rights.
  • The statute under which it is established is the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993 as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2006.
  • Section 2(1)(d) of the PHRA defines Human Rights as the rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants and enforceable by courts in India.
