October 6, 2015, the South Korean economist Hoesung Lee was elected chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Hoesung Lee was elected by 78 votes to 56 in a run-off with Jean-Pascalvan Ypersele.
The election took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where the IPCC was holding its 42nd session.
Lee, aged 69, is professor in the economics of climate change, energy and sustainable development at Korea University’s Graduate School of Energy and Environment in the Republic of Korea.
He is currently one of the IPCC’s three vice-chairs.
The IPCC was awarded with Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change.”
Lee have advocated to opening IPCC for the experts worldwide.
IPCC have intensively scientists from Europe and North America.
Lee expressed his opinion for involvement of women scientists in the organization.
