- Kerala became the first state in the country to achieve 100 percent primary education.
- To this effect, a declaration was made by the Vice President of India Hamid Ansari on 12 January 2016 at a special ceremony organised at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
- The success of Kerala in achieving total primary education can be attributed to various initiatives undertaken by the Kerala Literacy Mission in the last two decades.
- This has been achieved through the primary education equivalency drive of the state literacy mission — Athulyam.
- The second phase of Athulyam was carried out across the state as part of the Mission 676 of the government
- The equivalency programmes have proved a huge success and the ultimate objective is to achieve total Plus-Two education in the state
- The programme was meant to provide primary school education to people aged between 15 and 50.
- The mission mainly focused on deprived sections viz. the scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, physically, financially weak and mentally disabled among others.
- As a result, Kannur became the first district in the country to achieve total primary education in 2001.
