Question: Which instrument was declared as Goa’s Heritage Musical Instrument?
- On 11 February 2019,Govind Gaude, Art and Culture Minister of Goa, announced that Goa’s indigenous traditional percussion instrument named Ghumot made from an earthen vessel is to be notified as a heritage instrument.
- The instrument was banned due to the use of the skin of the endangered monitor lizard for the drum membrane.
- In recent years, Ghumot makers have started using goat skin which is excluded from animals listed in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
