  • On October 11, 2016 the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) released The Global Hunger Index-2016.
  • Like the previous year report GHI 2016 is based on four indicators that are undernourishment, child mortality, child wasting g (low weight for height) and child stunting (low height for age).This calculation results in GHI scores on a 100-point scale where 0 is the best score (no hunger) and 100 the worst.
  • The theme of GHI-2016 report is “GETTING TO ZERO HUNGER”.
  • According to GHI-2016 report, from 2000 to 2016 global hunger is fallen by 50%.
  • The 2016 GHI has been calculated for 118 countries out of which 50 countries are facing serious or alarming levels of Hunger.
  • In this year report, there are 16 countries with lowest GHI score (score -5, Argentina, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Estonia, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Ukraine) and Slovak Republic with 5.3 GHI scores is at the 17the place.
  • In global Hunger Index-2016 India is placed at 97th position while last year it was at 80th.
  • In GHI-2016 India found placed in serious category with score of 28.5.
  • Similar to the last year, this year also India has better condition compared to Pakistan, (107th place) however Nepal (72nd), Sri Lanka (84th) and Bangladesh (90th) are better placed than India.
  • According to the GHI-2016 10 countries are identified as cause for significant concern: Burundi, the Comoros, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Libya, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and the Syrian Arab Republic.
  • From the 2000 GHI to the 2016 GHI, 22 countries reduced their scores by 50 percent or more. The three that achieved the biggest percentage reductions in hunger of all the countries in the serious and alarming categories are Myanmar, Rwanda, and Cambodia.
