Parameters of the Index:

  • The Global Gender Gap Index benchmarks 153 countries on their progress towards gender parity in four dimensions:

  • Health and Survival and
  • Political Empowerment
  • Over the Index, the highest possible score is 1 (equality) and the lowest possible score is 0 (inequality).

Key findings:

  • Globally, the average (population-weighted) distance completed to parity is at 68.6%, which is a further improvement since last edition.
  • At current pace, it will take 99.5 years to achieve full parity between men and women.
  • The largest gender disparity is in political empowerment. Only 25% of the 35,127 seats in parliaments around the world are occupied by women, and only 21% of the 3,343 ministers are women.
  • Iceland is once again the most gender-equal country in the world for the 11th time in a row. It has closed almost 88% of its overall gender gap, further improving since last year.
  • Iceland is followed by Nordic neighbors Norway (2nd, 84.2%), Finland (3rd, 83.2%) and Sweden (4th, 82.0%).
  • Yemen is ranked the worst (153rd), while Iraq is 152nd and Pakistan 151st.
  • India is far behind other countries like China (106th), Sri Lanka (102nd), Nepal (101st), Brazil (92nd), Indonesia (85th) and Bangladesh (50th).
