On 28 October 2015 Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPNUML) has been elected as the first female President of Nepal.
In the Presidential election, Bidhya Devi Bhandari defeated her opponent Kul Bahadur Gurung of the Nepali Congress party by securing 327 against 217 votes of her opponent.
In Nepal, Bidhya Devi is long known for advocating women’s rights.
She became first President under newly promulgated Constitution of Nepal and second President since the Nepal became a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy.
It should be noted that Ram Baran Yadav was first elected President of Republic Nepal.
She sworn as president on 29 October 2015.
Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha administered the oath of office and secrecy in a special ceremony held at Nepal National building “Sheetal Niwas”.
