  • On 28 October 2015 Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPNUML) has been elected as the first female President of Nepal.
  • In the Presidential election, Bidhya Devi Bhandari defeated her opponent Kul Bahadur Gurung of the Nepali Congress party by securing 327 against 217 votes of her opponent.
  • In Nepal, Bidhya Devi is long known for advocating women’s rights.
  • She became first President under newly promulgated Constitution of Nepal and second President since the Nepal became a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy.
  • It should be noted that Ram Baran Yadav was first elected President of Republic Nepal.
  • She sworn as president on 29 October 2015.
  • Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha administered the oath of office and secrecy in a special ceremony held at Nepal National building “Sheetal Niwas”.
