Answer: (a)
Related facts:

  • In order to fructify Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s dream of a clean energy future for the ‘New India’,Government of India has implemented major programmes/ schemes and is offering various incentives for installation of renewable energy capacity in country.

Target:

  • The Government of India has set a target of 175 GW renewable power installed capacity by the end of 2022. This includes 60 GW from wind power, 100 GW from solar power, 10 GW from biomass power and 5 GW from small hydro power.

Achievements:

  • According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (year end review, 2018) India attains global 4th and 5th position in wind and solar power installed capacities.
  • India is now at 5th global position for overall installed renewable energy capacity.
  • The overall installed capacity in the country as on 31.10.2018 was 347.37GW in which energy through thermal sources contributed major(63.84%),Renewable energy contribution was 21.12%,13.09% of energy installation through hydro source and 1.95% by nuclear source.

Status of Renewable Energy Installation:

  • A total of 101.83 Billion units (73.35GW) of power were generated in the country during the year 2017-18 from renewable energy.
  • The overall installed renewable energy capacity in the country as on 31.10.2018 was 73.35 GW in which energy through wind power contributed major(34.98 GW),Solar Power Sector contribution was 24.33 GW,9.54 GW of energy installation through Bio Energy Sector and 4.5 GW of energy was installed by small hydro sector.
  • The cumulative renewable energy installed capacity has increased from 35.51 GW as on 31.03.2014 to 73.35 GW as on 31.10.2018 (increase of around 106% during last four &a half years).

Way Forward:
