  • World Soil Day is observed annually on the 5th of December at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome, the regional offices and through national and local events.
  • This day is celebrated to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocates sustainable management of soil resources.
  • The Theme for World Soil Day 2018 is: “Be the Solution to Soil Pollution”.
  • Formal adoption of this day took place in December 2013 at the 68th UN General Assembly.
  • In India, government facilitates Soil Health Cards to farmers to check the fertility status of their soil and enables them to apply soil health card based recommended dosages of fertilizers including micro-nutrients, bio-fertilizers, manures as well as soil ameliorants.
