- On 2 November 2015 International non-governmental organization Legatum Institute released ‘Legatum Prosperity Index’.
- The index covered 142 countries in the world, which contribute for almost 96 percent of the overall world population and account for 99 percent of global GDP.
- This index has been issued annually since 2007, on the basis of prosperity of nations, economic growth and quality of life.
- A total of 142 countries in the Index are ranked based on their score.
- The overall rank in the index based on 89 different variables.
- The variables are then split into eight sub-indices. These are: Economy, Entrepreneurship & Opportunity, Governance, Education, Health, Safety & Security, Personal Freedom, Social Capital.
- With an overall score of 3.504 points in the index Norway topped for the seventh consecutive year.
- Then Switzerland with the Score -3.337 ranked Second, Denmark with the Score -3.272 ranked Third, New Zealand with the Score -3.246 ranked fourth and Sweden with the Score -3.224 is ranked fifth.
- The bottom five countries in the index are Central African Republic (ranked 142), Afghanistan (ranked 141 ), Haiti (ranked 140), Chad (ranked 139) and Burundi (ranked 138)
India’s position:
- Legatum Prosperity Index, in 2015 ranked India at 99th position (Scored-0.801) while last year (LPI-2014) it was ranked 102.
- In this index neighboring countries of India are ranked as Sri Lanka (61), Nepal (89), Bangladesh (103), Pakistan (130) and Afghanistan (141).
- The index not included Bhutan, Myanmar and the Maldives.

In all the above areas indices indicate improvement for the India.
- In the area of individual (personal) freedom India ranked 79th (ranked 78th in 2014) indicates no improvement.
India’s position among the BRICS countries:
- If we compare the Legatum Prosperity Index 2014, position of India is at the bottom among the BRICS countries.
- This year position of the BRICS countries are: China (52nd place), Brazil (54th place), Russia (58th place) and South Africa (75th place).
