India joins the Wassenaar Arrangement

Question- India recently got membership in the Wassenaar arrangement. The purpose of the Wassenaar arrangement is to:
(a) To promote non-conventional energy.
(b) Control of the production of atomic weapons
(c) Control the export of conventional weapons and double-use items and technology.
(d) Controlling chemical weapons.

  • On December 7th, 2017, India became a member of the multilateral arms export control group ‘Wassenaar Arrangement’ (WA).
  • Process for India’s membership will be completed by the group soon.
  • It is notable that the twenty-third WA Plenary meeting, chaired by Ambassador Jean-Louis Falconi of France, was held in Vienna on 6th-7th December 2017.
  • Its aim is to control the export of conventional weapons and dual-use items and technology.
  • This led to increase in India’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.
  • With this decision, India’s claim in nuclear supplier group and Australia group became stronger.
  • Significantly, India is already a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (M.T.C.R.).
