Victory of Shinzo Abe in Re-election

  • Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe secured a crucial victory in Japan’s parliamentary elections held on October 19th, 2017.
  • Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party-led (LDP) coalition won a combined 312 seats, keeping its two-thirds “super majority” in the 465-member lower house.
  • If Abe serves out a complete four-year term, he will remain at the helm during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister.
  • He ran with very little opposition.
  • Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike launched her conservative Party of Hope ahead of the poll, splintering the traditional opposition. But Koike did not herself run for a seat in Parliament and her party failed to put forward a viable candidate.
  • Earlier Abe took office in December 2012.
  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, on victory in the snap polls.
