  • On 17th December 2018, CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) approved expansion of Ujjawala Yojana to cover the poor families who does not have the LPG connection and are not covered under the existing beneficiary categories.
  • Prior to this, the connections were given based on the 2011 Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC), the list was later expanded to include providing free cooking gas connection to all SC/ST households, forest dwellers, most backward classes, inhabitants of islands, nomadic tribes, tea estates and beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Antyodaya Yojana.
  • Ujjawala Yojana was launched on 1st May 2016 in Ballia by Prime Minister Narendra Modi; this scheme targeted of giving LPG connections mostly to rural women members of Below Poverty Level (BPL) category with a support of Rs.1600 per connection in the next 3 years. Till now, this scheme has delivered around 5.85 crore connections.
  • This step of expansion will ensure the LPG connection to almost 100% households.
