- With an aim to improve forestlands in targeted catchment areas of Tripura the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb launched a project for Sustainable Catchment Forest Management at State Forest Academy Ground in Hatipara in West Tripura.
- In this Project 1,447 check dams in hilly terrains of Tripura will be built. This Project is jointly funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Government of India.
- 80 % of the project would be funded by JICA while 20 % of the project value would be funded by Govt. of India. JICA will provide Rs. 1,000 crores in a period of 10 years.
- The water conserved through check dams would be used for agricultural purposes, for fisheries and poultry farming (ducks).
- Two check-dams will be built in the upper catchment of hilly rivers in Baramura Hills in order to check seasonal floods in Agartala.
- The State Government will focus on developing Agar cultivation and to grow black pepper, pineapples, bamboo, ginger, betel nut leaves in large scale in the near future.
